If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The number one
source of spyware infection is free software programs downloaded
from the Internet. Beware. Even if you think the program being
downloaded is legitimate, some malicious spyware can still sneak
into your computer. Check on reviews from other users before you
install any software.
Practice safe surfing.
Avoid websites that offer unscrupulous content such as pirated
software or adult material. These sites are notorious for infecting
computers.
Secure your browser
Set your browser's security settings to a higher level (Medium
on Internet Explorer). This may protect you from some "drive-by,"
or automatic installation of unwanted programs.
Delete spam
Email is a common source of infection. Delete messages from unknown
senders. Use extra caution before opening any attachments, even
from people you think you know. Because you don't necessarily
have to open an attachment, it's a good idea not to use the preview
pane for HTML emails, and be sure to delete these without previewing
the email to avoid initiating spyware programs.
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM WARD: Use Anti-spyware Software
Arm your PC with a tool designed to provide spyware protection.
Your computer can be infected and damaged even if you never violate
the rules listed above! An innocent use of a search engine can
infect you. So, arm your PC with a software tool designed to fight
spyware before it gets on your computer. There are two well-advertised
commercial programs, Pest Patrol and Spy Sweeper. Spy Sweeper
is the one we have tested and used in the I-Team office. It's
put out by the Boulder firm which was used in our story.
